GREENSBORO, N.C. — Finley Ewing IV and Clement Sordet canned back-to-back birdies on the 18th hole, lifting Texas Tech into fifth place after Thursday’s first round of the NCAA Greensboro Regional men’s golf tournament. A strong finish boosted the Red Raiders from a tie for eighth into the fifth spot in the 13-team field. The top five teams and two lowest-scoring individuals not on those teams advance to the NCAA championships May 29-June 3 at Riviera Country Club. Round two of the 54-hole regional tournament is today.

Lady Texan wins triple jump at NJCAA meet 05/17/12 - 5:42am

LEVELLAND — Keri Emanuel went into the NJCAA track and field championships seeded first in the women’s triple jump and long jump. One down, one to go in terms of meeting those lofty expectations. The South Plains College sophomore won the triple jump competition on day two of the meet Wednesday with a best mark of 41 feet, 13/4 inches. The LSU signee will go for a second title today in the long jump.

LEVELLAND — Jacob Naylor from Paradise Valley (Ariz.) Community College won the men’s 10,000 meters, and Ebeissa Nywandi from Iowa Central won the women’s 10,000 as the NJCAA track and field championships got under way Tuesday. The 10,000 meters had the only event finals on the first day of the three-day meet hosted by South Plains College.

Cody Crabaugh threw a four-hitter as No. 3 Oklahoma City University ended No. 19 LCU’s season with a 4-0 verdict Sunday, the first time the Chaparrals were shut out all season. Crabaugh didn’t allow a hit to the last 23 batters he faced.

BERKELEY, Calif. — Tim Siegel could barely describe the heartbreak he and his 22nd-ranked Texas Tech men’s tennis team were feeling after a 4-3 loss to No. 14 California in the second round of the NCAA tournament Sunday. “All the losses of my 20 years can’t add up to the pain that we’re feeling here,” Siegel said. “These three seniors did so much and battled right to the end.” A win would have put Tech in the round of 16 for the first time since 2005. Instead, the Red Raiders fell in the second round for the fourth time in five years.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Lily LaVelle hit a two-run homer in a three-run third inning, lifting No. 3 Oklahoma City University past No. 5 Lubbock Christian University 6-2 late Saturday for the championship of the Sooner Athletic Conference softball tournament. LaVelle drove in three runs and pitched a scoreless last three innings, striking out five, for her seventh save.

OKLAHOMA CITY — No. 5 Lubbock Christian University won three consecutive games in the elimination bracket to advance to the finals of the Sooner Athletic Conference softball tournament Saturday at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium. The Lady Chaparrals (51-6) were set to tangle with top-seeded Oklahoma City (39-17) in the championship game Saturday night. Earlier Saturday, LCU beat Oklahoma Christian 5-3 in the elimination bracket semifinals and downed Southern Nazarene 7-5 in the elimination bracket finals.

No. 24 LCU wins pool in SAC tourney 05/05/12 - 5:43am

OKLAHOMA CITY — Lubbock Christian University managed to turn its season around in only three days. No. 24 LCU downed No. 2 Oklahoma City 6-5 Friday night to win its pool in the Sooner Athletic Conference baseball tournament and advance to the championship game. More important, the Chaparrals clinched a berth in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round, something that was far from assured after LCU lost eight of its last 13 regular-season games.

AUSTIN — Zane Stafford had no chance to contend in the Class 3A state golf tournament after a forgettable first day. He still had time, though, to leave with a respectable round. The Levelland junior climbed back up the scoreboard with a final-day 75 Friday at Jimmy Clay Golf Course after opening with an 87. He was playing at state for the first time.

Andrews takes lead in state 3A golf tourney 05/04/12 - 5:25am

AUSTIN — Defending state champion Sarah Black shot a 76 in the first round of the Class 3A state tournament Thursday at Jimmy Clay Golf Course, and the Andrews sophomore and her team both have the lead going into today’s final round. Andrews is trying to win the girls state championship for the second year in a row, the fourth time in six years and the 10th time overall. Black has a one-shot lead, and teammate Whitlee Woods is in a tie for third at 78. In the 3A boys race, Andrews is in fourth place, 13 shots out. The Mustangs shot 316.
