Lubbock’s Best Buy location won’t be among 50 stores the Minneapolis-based big box electronics retailer will close as part of a reorganization aimed at cutting some $800 million in costs by fiscal 2015, according to a Texas Tech business faculty member who is a former director of the company. “The Lubbock store is a jewel for Best Buy,” said Jim Wetherbe, associate dean of research at Tech’s Rawls College of Business.

Sundown running back Garrett Carter earned first-team honors on the Texas Sports Writers Association All-State football team released on Tuesday.

BRYAN — Tenaha quarterback and Texas Tech commitment Reginald Davis was named the Class 1A Offensive Player of the Year, while Sundown running back Garrett Carter earned first-team honors on the Texas Sports Writers Association All-State football team released on Tuesday. Davis, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior, passed for 2,015 yards on 101 of 168 with 26 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also carried the ball 172 times for 1,915 yards with 36 TDs in leading the unbeaten Tigers to the Division II title.

Tech ex Sears wins another world title in barrel-racing 12/12/11 - 6:22am

Lindsay Sears is a world champion again. The former Texas Tech standout won her second barrel-racing world title in four years Saturday night in the National Finals Rodeo at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev. The second-place money Sears earned in Saturday’s round 10 boosted her final total for the year to $238,864, more than $40,000 ahead of second-place finisher Brittany Pozzi. Sears also took the 10-round NFR aggregate title, good for $45,865, with 10 runs in 139.50 seconods. Sears and her mare, Martha, went 13.75 seconds in the final round.

Ex-Red Raider Polk claims spot on national team 06/27/11 - 6:27am

Tori Polk last competed for Texas Tech four years ago. All her years worth of preparation, however, paid off Sunday. The 28-year-old Polk earned a spot on the national team to the IAAF world championships this summer by finishing fourth in the women's long jump at the U.S. outdoor track and field championships in Eugene, Ore.
