WOODROW — Brownfield struck early, but Bushland struck more often, and that made the difference.
The Falcons overcame an early 14-0 deficit by shutting out the Cubs in the second field and putting together an impressive offensive display en route to a 35-22 Class 2A Division I bi-district football win at Pirate Stadium on Thursday night.
Bushland (5-6 overall) advances to the area round, where it will face Wall at a time, date and site to be determined. Brownfield, making its first postseason appearance since 2007, finished the year 5-6.
The Falcons took control of the game with a pair of impressive third-quarter touchdown drives. Trailing 22-15 at intermission, Bushland took the second-half kick and moved 54 yards in nine plays. The touchdown came on a fourth-and-2 when Payton Coldiron took a direct snap and bolted up the middle to the end zone. The point after-kick made it 22-22 with 8:57 remaining in the third quarter.
Brownfield went three plays and out, and the Falcons took over at their own 48. Five plays later, they were in the end zone again — this time on a 5-yard pass from quarterback Taylor Cornelius to Carson Paetzold. The conversion pushed Bushland to a 29-22 lead with 6:08 left.
The Cubs put together a couple of drives to try and answer. The most promising one last 14 plays and chewed up half of the third quarter, but Brownfield was unable to score when a pass on fourth-and-14 fell incomplete. The team had enjoyed success riding the footwork of sophomore quarterback Sha’Colby Hill, who carried 26 times for 254 yards. However, 169 of that came on his first four carries, so the Falcons did a nice job of bottling him up during the final three quarters.
Brownfield made one final push to score, moving from the Falcon 42 to the 7, but a Hill pass on second-and-goal was tipped and then nicely intercepted by Bayler Andrews just before stepping out of bounds at the 3. Bushland then put the game out of reach by moving 97 yards in 15 plays to a 1-yard plunge by Cornelius that accounted for the final score.
Early on, the Cubs looked unstoppable. On the team’s second play from scrimmage, Hill took the snap, made a couple of cuts and raced 78 yards for a touchdown that gave Brownfield a 7-0 lead at the 11:09 mark of the opening quarter. After Bushland was forced to punt on its first possession, Hill struck again, racing 80 yards for a score at the 7:33 mark to give the Cubs a 14-0 lead.
The Falcons cut the gap to 14-7 with 9:54 remaining before halftime on a 4-yard run by Frank Byers and then scored again on a nice 30-yard pass from Cornelius, who finished with 325 passing yards, to Colter Cornelius. A trick play on the conversion resulted in two points and a 15-14 Bushland lead.
Brownfield answered with a 59-yard drive just before intermission that ended with a 23-yard pass from Hill to split end Jordan Demps, who dodged traffic and scored with 1:11 left before halftime.
