Could state basketball tournament be headed out of Austin?

There is a potential problem with the boys state basketball tournament in 2013, UIL executive director Dr. Charles Breithaupt said Monday.

The growth of the South by Southwest Music and Film Festival in Austin has brought about problems in terms of adequate hotel space for state basketball tournament participants and fans the past two years, with many being forced to stay in hotels in surrounding communities.

Breithaupt said that as of right now, for the 2013 boys state tournament, there are not enough hotel rooms in Austin for the 24 participating teams, much less the fans and media that go with them. It could mean the boys state tournament is either held on a different weekend or moved to another venue altogether.

“We would like to have (the girls and boys tournaments) in the same site if possible,” Breithaupt said. “That Friday and Saturday night of the boys tournament, when South by Southwest moves in, then rooms that are already pretty much a premium become more of an issue when they start charging $300 or $400 a night.”

Breithaupt said there are some new hotels opening in downtown Austin that could relieve the problem, but that South by Southwest is contracted with Austin through 2030, so the state tournament will have to become flexible — or possibly mobile.
