Boys soccer

Chach Olivarez and Claudia Sanchez scored goals to give Monterey a win over rival Coronado on Tuesday. Courtney Pitman notched an assist for the Lady Plainsmen. Monterey improved to 12-6-1 and 4-0-1 in District 2-5A play. The Lady Plainsmen will next be in action at 12 p.m. on Saturday, when it takes on Amarillo at Dick Bivins Stadium. Coronado, Monterey rally to win, set up showdown 02/18/12 - 6:33am

MERKEL — Lizzy and Suzzy Dimba scored 14 points apiece and Coronado rallied to beat Arlington Bowie 55-52 Friday, setting up an all-Lubbock regional-quarterfinal game with rival Monterey. The Lady Mustangs (26-6) and the Lady Plainsmen (24-7) will square off at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Rip Griffin Center for a berth in the Region I-5A tournament. Coronado swept the District 2-5A regular-season games between the two teams.

Slaton defeats Crane in bi-district playoff 02/16/12 - 6:48am

Shay Felton led three Tigerettes in double figures with 18 points, and Slaton pulled away early and never looked back in doubling up Crane, 72-35, in a Class 2A bi-district playoff Tuesday night at the Rip Griffin Center. Alexia Talley added 14 points and Karli McCord chipped in 13 for Slaton (23-8), which will face Tulia (25-7) in the area round. That game is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Hutcherson Center in Plainview.

AMARILLO — Fifth-ranked Frenship clinched the District 3-4A title with a 66-44 road victory against Randall on Feb. 7. Michael Grant led the Tigers with 23 points. Grant had eight field goals and was 7 of 7 from the free-throw line. Tyler Rogers added 18 points for the Tigers. The Tigers concluded the regular season against rival Plainview and will take on an opponent to be determined in the bi-district round of the Class 4A playoffs next week at a time, date and site to be determined. Trinity girls finish perfect run through TAPPS 1-4A 02/05/12 - 6:58am

Katy Boren poured in 28 points and seventh-ranked Trinity Christian routed Arlington Grace Prep 80-27 Saturday, moving within one victory of wrapping up a perfect run through TAPPS District 1-4A. Ashton Meeks added 16 points for the Lady Lions (24-12, 11-0), who finish the regular season next week with a non-district game against Hobbs, N.M., and the TAPPS 1-4A finale against Arlington Pantego Christian. Most observers think realignment will be good for Monterey, Lubbock High 02/03/12 - 8:07am

Thursday morning, the expected changes for Lubbock and Monterey became reality as they join the new District 4-4A.

The usual rivalry between student fans took a different tone recently at a basketball game between Coronado and Monterey high schools as students from Coronado launched a terse and cutting chant to their crosstown opponent. “4A. (clap, clap, clap) No thanks,” Mustang students yelled. Both schools knew the University Interscholastic League realignments would be announced soon, and most speculated Monterey and Lubbock high schools would drop in classification from 5A to 4A, leaving Coronado as the only 5A competitor in the Lubbock Independent School District.

UIL splits LISD's largest schools; Monterey and LHS go to 4A; 2-3A gets a lot tougher 02/03/12 - 8:41am

For the first time in the history of LHS and Monterey, they will not be competing at the highest level in the state of Texas.

It was anticipated going into Thursday morning’s announcement that the University Interscholastic League would drop Lubbock High and Monterey to Class 4A. It was still a bit of a shock seeing it in print, confirming for the first time in both schools’s history they would not be competing at the highest level in the state of Texas. At the same time, Lubbock High’s football coach said it will give the Westerners a chance to be competitive, which the school has sought for several years.
