Pete Murray managed to pull off a difficult double: Winning football games and championships while having people like him at the same time. Those who knew him say that was the legacy of the Estacado football coach who bridged the gap between the Jimmie Keeling and Louis Kelley eras. Murray, who coached Estacado from 1970 through 1974, died Saturday in Ruidoso, N.M., according to an obituary provided to the Avalanche-Journal. He was 79.

Baseball

Krista Snodgrass drove in three runs in each game and Lubbock Christian High swept Arlington Burton 25-1 and 26-2 Monday to finish undefeated in district play for the fourth year in a row. The Lady Eagles (28-8, 12-0 in TAPPS District 1-3A) also got three runs batted in apiece in the first game from Madeleine Hammond and Renni Scarborough and two RBIs each from Shaylin Stephenson, Lindsay Brewer and Kendra Townsend. In game two, Kaitlyn Stephenson drove in three runs and Tori Brown, Brewer, Madison Robins and Jenny Rigney drove in two apiece.

LCHS softball clinches TAPPS Dist. 1-3A title 04/22/13 - 12:14am

The Lubbock Christian High school softball team clinched the TAPPS District 1-3A title with a pair of blowout victories Saturday against Haltom City Bethesda. The Lady Eagles beat Bethesda 24-0 despite notching only four hits in the first game, and then toppled Bethesda 16-6, getting just five hits. Both games lasted five innings. Shaylin Stephenson threw a no-hitter in the first game. Renni Scarborough doubled in the first game, and Krista Snodgrass had a two-bagger in the second.

Roosevelt hoops standout, Cooper trio sign letters of intent 04/18/13 - 12:32am

A trio of Cooper athletes signed letters of intent Wednesday afternoon to further their athletic careers on the next level. Abbi White (Lubbock Christian University, softball), Chandler Patterson (Angelo State, baseball) and Katy Headrick (McMurry, volleyball) all signed during a ceremony at Cooper High School in Woodrow.

High school sports roundup: Lindstrom sets Lubbock Invitational record in pole vault 03/30/13 - 12:43am

Coronado senior Brooke Lindstrom set a Lubbock Invitational track and field meet record Friday, clearing 11 feet, 6 inches to win the pole vault. The performance came on Lindstrom’s home turf. Coronado is hosting the Lubbock Invitational for the second year in a row because of construction at Lowrey Field. Lindstrom tied her season best. She also went 11-6 to win at the Tall City Invitational four weeks ago in Midland. The previous Lubbock Invitational record was 11-0, set last year Morgan Hartsell from Frenship. Hartsell cleared 11-0 again Friday for second place.

High school golf: Frenship, Monterey set pace in 4-4A boys tourney 03/27/13 - 12:30am

Frenship widened its lead in the District 4-4A boys golf tournament while the Tigers’ Dathan Terry shot 5-over-par 77 and moved into second place during Tuesday’s second round at the Rawls Course. Frenship has a 40-stroke lead on second-place Monterey going into the final round, which is scheduled for April 8 at Plainview Country Club. The Tigers have four players from their first team in the top seven on the leaderboard.

A big fourth inning proved to be enough for Lubbock High on Friday night as the Westerners won their non-district finale 6-4 against Shallowater. After plating two runs in the first, Anthony Martinez doubled in a run, Jalen Holland drove in two and Michael Davis hit a sac fly to cap a four-run second. Shallowater got back one in the third and three unearned runs in the fifth, getting RBIs by Connor Smith and Cody Berryman during Friday’s match, but couldn’t threaten any further.

Bridges tosses one-hitter for Mustangs 03/15/13 - 12:43am

Taylor Bridges threw a one-hitter and a run in the sixth inning proved enough to lead the Mustangs past Abilene High 1-0 on Thursday night in District 2-5A action. Bridges (3-1) out dueled the Eagles’ Payton Coffman (0-4), as both pitchers went the distance. Bridges finished with four strikeouts and two walks, allowing the lone Abilene hit in the first inning.

South Plains teams grabbed their share of TAPPS titles 03/15/13 - 12:35am

Lubbock Christian High coach Brad Crow walked into the locker room at halftime of a state championship game two weekends ago and tried to break the tension. “I said, ‘Hey, guys. We’re only down seven this time. We’ve got this,’” Crow told his team. The Eagles had trailed by 10 points at halftime of their TAPPS Class 3A state semifinal and by eight points at the break in the game before that. “Every game, we had big third quarters,” Crow said. “I don’t know why. Every game, the kids came out focused in the second half.”
