A-J seeks nominations for All-South Plains The Avalanche-Journal seeks nominations for its 2012 All-City and All-South Plains high school baseball and softball teams. Nominations, which must come from the team’s head coach, should include the player’s name, year in school, primary position and all pertinent statistics and postseason honors (all-district, all-state). Nominations may be faxed to (806) 766-2180 or emailed to sports@lubbockonline.com.

Frenship golfers wrap up season at 4A state meet 05/03/12 - 5:02am

AUSTIN — Frenship junior Emiley Odom might have played more state-tournament rounds than any girl on the Jimmy Clay Golf Course this week — just not in the state of Texas. Her track record as a state-level golfer in Missouri proved to be beneficial and not so beneficial. Odom shot 80 on Monday, 81 on Tuesday — her two lowest state rounds ever — and finished tied for 16th in a field of 48 at the UIL Class 4A state tournament.

Frenship leads in District 3-4A track meet 04/12/12 - 5:42am

WOLFFORTH — Competing on its home track, Frenship took the first-day lead in both the girls’ and boys’ competition Wednesday at the District 3-4A track and field meet. Four individual second- and third-place finishes helped the Frenship boys tally 35 points to put the Tigers three ahead of Palo Duro with five events completed. The Frenship girls have 31 points, three more than second-place Randall after four events. Today is the final day of the meet with field events starting at 1 p.m. and running-event finals at 3 p.m. DISTRICT 3-4A MEET

High school sports roundup: Hobbs beats LCHS in non-district game 04/10/12 - 5:28am

Hobbs, N.M. took advantage of seven walks and two hit batters to beat Lubbock Christian High 10-5 Monday in a non-district high school softball game. Kailee Ramirez singled, doubled, homered and drove in two runs for Hobbs (9-7). Ciara Gregory added two hits for Hobbs. LCHS got a 3-for-4, two-RBI game from Brenna Adkins. Avery Branson had two hits and scored two runs. LCHS (20-9) will host TAPPS District 1-3A opponent Amarillo San Jacinto in a 4:30 p.m. game today at The Diamond at Eagle Park. For hitters, please include at-bats, runs, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, RBIs and batting average. For pitchers, please include win-loss record, innings pitched, hits, runs, earned runs, walks, strikeouts and earned run average.

High school golf roundup: Massie helps Lubbock High to second-place finish 04/04/12 - 5:40am

Alex Massie carded a final-round 82 Monday at Meadowbrook Golf Course, finishing second individually and helping Lubbock High Black place second as a team in the District 2-5A golf tournament. The Lady Westerners, who finished 25 strokes behind district champion Amarillo Black, advance to the Region I-5A tournament scheduled for April 18-19 at the Rawls Course. Massie, whose 82 followed a 79 in the first round, was one shot behind Amarillo Black’s Lindsay Sames for the individual medalist honor.

ABERNATHY — Andrew Flores and Abraham Villarreal paced New Deal past Abernathy, 7-6, in a wild, extra-inning game Tuesday night. Flores and Villarreal doubled twice, and Villarreal also hit his first home run of the season. Flores also pitched a complete game on the mound to help New Deal improve to 10-5 overall. ACUFF — Levi Sherrill and Ryan Chumley drove in three runs apiece and Curtis Sanchez threw a shortened complete game as Roosevelt run-ruled Coahoma 18-1 Tuesday night in District 3-2A baseball. Sanchez (4-1) struck out six and did not walk a batter. He held Coahoma (0-12, 0-3) to a run on four hits, and the game was stopped in the fifth inning by 10-run rule.
