Baxter takes title for rallying the Pirates from a sub-.500 record to the state tournament.
The Cooper Pirates made a return trip to the state tournament in 2014, although it wasn’t nearly as smooth as that might sound.
On March 7, the Pirates seemed to be going nowhere with a 3-12 record and an eight-game losing streak. Maybe no one other than the players themselves could have predicted what happened next.
Cooper got hot in the second half of the season and won five rounds in the playoffs, taking the Region I-3A title. Top-ranked College Station had all it could handle before holding off Cooper 9-8 in the Class 3A state semifinals in Austin.
