Final exams, senior projects and visions of college days ahead are factors ripe for prying attention. Tobias resigns as Lubbock High baseball coach 05/22/12 - 5:38am

Freddie Tobias has resigned his position as the baseball coach at Lubbock High. In a letter of resignation submitted to Lubbock ISD athletic director Mark Ball on May 14, Tobias wrote, “I have enjoyed my time with the athletes and my assistant coaches over the last several years. However, I am certain that stepping aside now will allow LHS to seek out the right candidate to replace me and keep the program moving forward.” Tobias coached the Westerners for six seasons. He was hired in 2006 after spending the previous three seasons as the coach at Floydada.

Bushland defeats Floydada to win I-2A series 05/20/12 - 5:51am

CANYON — Gerald Reyna carried a shutout into the seventh inning and finished with a three-hitter, leading Bushland past Floydada 7-1 Saturday and completing a sweep of the Region I-2A quarterfinal baseball series. Reyna (8-0) struck out seven, walked four and allowed two runners past second base. He got backing from Blane Barnett, who hit four doubles and scored four runs, and Colton Cornelius, who had two hits and three runs batted in. Bushland (26-5-1) moves on to face Blanco in the Region I-2A semifinals.

Victor Gomez sat on the bench in the home dugout at Matador Field. His knees were spread slightly, head resting against the brick wall, his body slumped and exhausted from spending more than five hours weighed down by catcher’s gear in unforgiving West Texas heat. He sat that way for several minutes in his dirt-and-grass-stained uniform. He didn’t want to take it off, as if doing so would make the numbers on the scoreboard true. Maybe if he left his black Matador jersey draped over his broad shoulders the senior could take one more swing, catch one more pitch.

After all, they remember being dissatisfied with their series victory the week before against Fabens when they were twice held under five runs. “We weren’t really sure what we were doing wrong,” Hunter Spear said. “We weren’t disciplined at the plate, just having bad approaches. This week at practice, we changed a few things and saw some lefty pitching. I think it helped us a lot.”

ABILENE — The Saturday magic finally ran out for the Coronado baseball team. The Mustangs, who had rallied five times in the last two years after losing Game 1 of a postseason series, were held to just three hits Saturday as No. 1-ranked Arlington Martin beat Coronado 5-1 to complete a two-game sweep in a Region I-5A quarterfinal series at Hardin-Simmons University’s Hunter Field. Martin downed the Mustangs 9-3 in the first game Friday night.
