PLAINVIEW — Based on what happened Friday, the Tulia Hornets had every reason to think they had a fighting chance entering Game 2 of their series Saturday against Idalou. Then again, Saturday wasn’t Friday, except for the fact Idalou won again. A monstrous second inning by the Wildcats in the second game of a Region I-2A quarterfinal series at Wilder Field propelled Idalou to a 19-1 rout of the Hornets in five innings due to the run rule and a complete sweep of the best-of-three series.

PLAINVIEW—When Frenship took the field for the final Region 1-4A quarterfinal matchup against Randall, things didn’t look good. The Tigers had just fallen to Randall 4-2 in the second game, and their bats were not as hot as they’d been the night before. “Fortunately, our guys didn’t panic,” said Frenship coach Chad Reynolds. “They lived to play another day and fought hard.” The Tigers regrouped in commanding fashion after the break, dominating Randall en route to an 11-0 victory and a spot in the regional semifinals for the first time since 2010.

Cooper Pirates sweep Wylie in Class 3A regional quarterfinals 05/19/13 - 1:00am

MIDLAND — Scotland Church threw a four-hit shutout and Cooper scored eight runs with two outs in the fifth inning to beat Abilene Wylie 13-0 Saturday and sweep their Region I-3A quarterfinal series in two games. Cooper had a 5-0 lead with two outs and a runner at third in the fifth when Braden Hayward struck out but hustled to first on a dropped third strike to keep the inning alive. After that, Ryan Moseley’s two-run double made it 7-0, Chandler Patterson’s two-run double made it 11-0 and Stanton Keane’s two-run single finished the outburst.

MIDLAND — Chase Freeman and Chandler Patterson had two hits and two runs batted in apiece as Cooper rallied from an early deficit to beat Abilene Wylie 7-4 Friday in the opener of a best-of-three Region I-3A quarterfinal series at Christensen Stadium. Ryan Moseley (8-1) shook off Wylie’s two-run first inning and pitched a complete game for Cooper (26-10), striking out 11 with one walk. One of the runs off him was unearned. The Pirates backed him with 13 hits, eight for extra bases.

PLAINVIEW — For four innings Friday night, Randall and Frenship were involved in a tense showdown in the middle innings that could have gone either way. Everything went Frenship’s way from then on, putting the Tigers one win away from advancing to the regional semifinals. Randall held a precarious one-run lead going into the fifth inning with ace senior right-hander Addison Russ on the mound. Then Frenship put together a four-run fifth and went on to a 13-4 victory in the first game of a Region I-4A quarterfinal series at Wilder Field.
