Stephenson's game winner keeps LCHS alive in playoffs

COLLEYVILLE — Brooks Stephenson’s 3-point goal at the buzzer lifted Lubbock Christian High to a dramatic 65-62 victory at Colleyville Covenant Christian in a TAPPS Class 3A area-round playoff Saturday.

Stephenson, who scored 10 points, launched his 22-foot shot from left of the key and it finally subdued a determined comeback by Colleyville Covenant.

LCHS (24-9) will play a regional-round playoff game at 11 a.m. Saturday at Plano John Paul II High School against the winner of No. 12 Garland Christian and No. 6 Arlington Burton.

Connor Bryant scored 22 points and the Eagles led by as many as 15. Colleyville Covenant (19-11) rallied behind Trey Jackson, who scored 17 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter, including a bucket that put the Cougars ahead.

LCHS got a 3 from Peyton Maddox and a steal and layup from Stephenson in the final two minutes, but the Cougars ralied to tie , setting the stage for Stephenson’s game winner.

Manny Ryan finished with 18 points for LCHS.

Ashton Meeks scored 22 points, Katy Boren added 15 and No. 6 Trinity Christian advanced to the TAPPS Class 4A regional round by winning at home against Fort Bend Christian Academy.

The Lady Lions (27-12) will play an opponent to be determined at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Fort Worth Nolan Catholic.

Morgan Prince chipped in 11 points for Trinity.

Parker Wentz poured in 28 points and No. 3 Trinity Christian posted an easy home playoff victory against San Antonio Texas Military Institute.

The win moved the Lions (36-3) into a showdown with No. 5 Houston Westbury Christian, the team that stopped them in the TAPPS 4A state semifinals last season. The two heavyweights will square off at 3 p.m. Saturday in a regional-round game in Houston.

Trinity got 13 points from Dave Miller, 12 from Beau Durham, 11 from Myles Leonard and 10 from Tanner Gregory.

Jordan Gutierrez and Marc Casares both scored in the second half, and Monterey held off a late charge to take down Lubbock High in a District 2-5A match.

The win was the 250th career victory for Monterey coach Donnie Matticks.

Cobi Faz picked up an assist for Monterey (8-7-0, 3-1-0).

LITTLEFIELD — Lubbock Christian High used a nine-run first inning and the strong pitching of Summer Petrie to capture third place in the Lady Cat Classic.

Petrie (1-0) threw five-plus innings, scattering three hits while striking out five.

LCHS (3-1) pounded out 13 hits, led by Sydney Roberts, who went 3 for 4 with two triples and an RBI, and Kaitlyn Stephenson, who went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Avery Brandon drove in three.

Caprock Classic

Lani Munoz went 3 for 3 and scored the eventual winning run on an error as Coronado topped Cooper 2-1 to win the Caprock Classic girls softball tournament.

Munoz came in when Katlin Reed’s popup to shallow right glanced off the second baseman’s glove. Tori Ruiz went 2 for 3 and drove in the other Coronado run with a first-inning single.

Abbi White’s RBI double in the fourth tied the game for Cooper (4-1). The Lady Pirates got a 2-for-3 performance from Bree Coons.

Kristin Tijerina (4-0) struck out five with no walks.

Cooper advanced to the last game of the 18-team tournament with a 14-3 rout of Monterey, with winning pitcher Lauren Heinrich driving in three runs. Coronado got there by beating Estacado 16-1 with Cierra Galindo and Tijerina each having two-hit games.
