City boys high school basketball roundup: Strong fourth quarter helps Cooper boys win opener

WOODROW — Keenan Lewis scored 22 points to lead Cooper to a season-opening win against Kermit on Tuesday night.

Balanced scoring for the Pirates saw four players reach double figures. Brent Carlton scored 19 points and Mitchell Gilles scored 18. Dalton Davis chipped in 10 points.

Cooper (1-0) trailed by four points entering the fourth quarter, but it used a dominating 25-13 edge in the period to pull away.

Jacob Carrasco scored 18 points to lead Kermit (0-1). David Dingle added 17 and Tristan Cano scored 16.

The two teams combined for 48 fouls.

WOLFFORTH — Frenship hit four of its 11 3-pointers in the third quarter to put Midland Lee away in both teams’ season opener Tuesday.

Lucas Schuster led all scorers with 21 points, including four 3s, Isaiah Pillman chipped in 16 and Bradley Mitchell scored 13 for the host Tigers.

Frenship pushed the ball up the court in the second quarter to take a 13-point advantage into the half, shutting down the Rebels in the third quarter to lead a strong second-half defensive effort.

Anthony McCoy led Midland Lee with 20 points, and Jordan Williams scored 10.

The Sandies jumped out to a 38-13 first half lead to put the Westerners away early.

Duqualin McGraw led LHS with 14 points in a losing effort. Braden Frullo recorded 13 for the Westerners. John Hood chipped in 12 for Amarillo.
