It’s the final push for high school basketball teams to squeeze in as many games as possible before the Christmas break.
Coronado, meanwhile, continues District 2-5A play with a road trip to Abilene Cooper, beginning with the girls game at 6 p.m. followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Mustangs (15-1), coming off a trouncing of Dallas Skyline in a non-district clash on Saturday, cracked the top 10 of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll this week, moving up to No. 9.
Perhaps the two most intriguing matchups of Tuesday happen in the same gym where Idalou hosts Shallowater in a girls/boys doubleheader.
On the girls side, Shallowater jumped to No. 7 in the TABC poll after capturing a second straight tournament title, winning the Abernathy Shootout to improve to 13-0 on the season. To win the title, the Fillies had to squeeze past No. 13 Idalou (8-3) 42-38 in the championship, and now the Lady Cats get another shot on their home floor.
On the boys side, the Wildcats, ranked No. 11 at 7-3, host Shallowater’s boys, who are off to a 9-2 start under first-year coach Jay Lusk, The two teams met on Friday in the Abernathy Shootout semifinals, with Idalou winning, 55-36, then going on to beat host Abernathy to win the tournament.
Other top games on the girls side have Lubbock Christian and hot-shooting guard Ashlee De La Cruz visiting No. 12 Smyer, which is 11-3 in the post-Haley Fowler era. Also, No. 3 Cooper (13-0) visits No. 19 Abilene Wylie (8-5).
In boys, rivals Roosevelt and Littlefield clash at Wildcat Gym while New Deal hosts Sundown, and a young Trinity Christian squad hosts perennial power Palo Duro.
