Playoff spots are falling by the wayside as the girls high school basketball regular season winds down, and the boys teams are in the stretch of district play today.
The No. 5 Coronado girls have the night off after clinching the District 2-5A title on Friday at home against Odessa Permian, and all four spots in District 4-4A have been clinched after Monterey beat Lubbock High to sweep the season series from the Lady Westerners.
But playoff seeds in 4-4A are still up for grabs with key games this week, starting today as Hereford (14-12, 5-2) visits Monterey (14-13, 4-3). The Lady Whitefaces beat the Lady Plainsmen by six, 70-64, in the first round of district play.
A win by the Lady Plainsmen today, and a Frenship (14-10, 5-2) win over San Angelo Lake View (4-21, 0-7) would set up a showdown for second place on Friday at the Tiger Pit.
Nothing has been decided in 2-3A where No. 6 Cooper (26-3, 6-1) and No. 10 Shallowater (2-43, 6-1) remain tied for the district lead, two games ahead of Estacado (19-9, 4-3), which has lost two straight since beating Cooper on Jan. 18. The 18th-ranked Lady Matadors begin the week tied with Levelland (18-11, 4-3) for third place in district.
No. 14 Idalou continues to run away with District 3-2A and can clinch the league crown outright with a win today over Childress. Roosevelt (12-16), Slaton (21-8) and Childress (24-5) all enter the week tied for second at 4-3.
In Class 1A, New Deal (22-7, 6-0) steps out of district play to take on Anton after having clinched a playoff spot.
On the boys side, Frenship (20-8) tries to rebound after suffering its first district loss of the year at Plainview, now tied with the Bulldogs (15-12) for the top spot in 4-4A at 4-1 as the second round of district play begins. Also, Lubbock High’s upset of Monterey on Friday throws the Westerners, Monterey and San Angelo Lake View into a three-way tie for third at 2-3.
Seminole (18-7, 5-0) opens the second half of District 2-3A on top after its win Friday over Cooper (12-13, 4-1). Estacado, which has struggled all season with youth, is getting back into the playoff picture as well. The Matadors (9-14, 3-2) beat Shallowater (17-8, 2-3) on Friday, but have a big test in hosting Seminole today.
In TAPPS action, Lubbock Christian hosts a girls/boys doubleheader against Amarillo San Jacinto.
