Playoff and district championship implications abound as the girls prepare for the postseason and the boys hit their final week of games.
Two huge playoff-for-seeding games affect a pair of city teams:
■ Monterey and Hereford will meet to determine the third and fourth seeds out of District 4-4A tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Hutcherson Center in Plainview. The teams finished with identical 5-5 district records. The winner will be the third seed and play Amarillo in the first round of the playoffs, while the loser will be the fourth seed and take on District 3-4A champion Palo Duro.
■ It’s all or nothing for Estacado and Levelland girls tonight at 6 p.m. at the Texan Dome in Levelland. The teams finished tied for third in District 2-3A after Levelland beat Shallowater and Estacado lost to Cooper. The winner will be in the playoffs and the loser is done for the year.
■ Also, Cooper’s win and Shallowater’s loss left them tied for first. A coin flip late Tuesday night determined that Cooper would be the No. 1 seed and earn a first-round bye, while Shallowater will be the No. 2 seed.
■ In boys action, District 4-4A has two huge games with playoff implications. Frenship (23-8, 7-1) host Plainview (17-13, 6-2) with the Tigers leading the Bulldogs by a game thanks to Monterey’s uspet of Plainview on Tuesday. However, the Bulldogs beat the Tigers in the first round of district play, so a win would not only pull them into a tie with Frenship but give them the head-to-head advantage.
■ Speaking of Monterey, their win over Plainview has put the Plainsmen (13-15, 4-4) in prime position to sew up a playoff spot tonight. But rival Lubbock High (13-17, 4-4), whom Monterey hosts at the New Box, is in the same position, and the Westerners beat the Plainsmen in the first round of district. Both teams are two games ahead of San Angelo Lake View, so the loser could clinch a spot if the Chiefs lose to Hereford.
■ Seminole can clinch the outright District 2-3A crown with a win at Shallowater tonight. But the Mustangs have plenty of incentive to keep that from happening as they enter the night in a three-way tie for second with Cooper and a suddenly surging Estacado team.
■ In TAPPS action, Trinity Christian faces a crucial weekend on the road, first taking on Grapevine Faith tonight at 7:30. Wins this weekend will go a long way toward setting the Lions up for the District 1-4A championship.
