After a weekend of futility, the East finally salvaged some good feelings from the Six-Man Coaches Association weekend.

Richland Springs standout Denim Reeves rushed for 140 yards and five touchdowns, and the East got off to a strong start and pulled away from the West for a 62-26 victory in the Division II All-Star game Saturday night at Peoples Bank Stadium.

Up until that point, the East had been shut out for the weekend as the West won the Division I football game Friday night as well as both the girls and boys basketball games earlier Saturday.

But no one on the field Saturday night could match Reeves, who helped lead Richland Springs to the Division II state championship in 2010.

He set the tone with touchdown runs of 18 and 3 yards in the first half as the East held a 22-0 halftime advantage. Reeves, the game MVP, then scored on three straight possessions in the third and fourth quarters on runs of 8, 17 and 53 yards to seal the outcome at 56-12.

His performance was part of a 230-yard rushing effort by the East that offset a 332-yard passing display by the West.

After being shut out in the first half, the West offense came alive, scoring two plays after an onside kick to start the second half when Cole Booze of Miami hit Seth Mahan of Dawson for a 36-yard touchdown to cut the East lead to 22-6.

But R.J. Helmuth of Rising Star returned the ensuing onside kick attempt 42 yards for a touchdown. The West came back with a 14-yard touchdown catch by Dennis Sprouse of Throckmorton, the first of two for him in the second half, that made it 30-12.

The East retaliated as Hayden Thomas of Fannindel added a 45-yard scoring run to push the lead to 36-12.

Reeves then scored three straight touchdowns to put it out of reach.

The West would add a 55-yard TD catch by Sprouse and a 17-yard touchdown run by Aaron Rogers of Motley County, and the East finished off the scoring with 2:13 left when Levi Smith of Woodson hit Germaine Armstrong from Milford for an 8-yard scoring strike with 2:13 remaining.

The first quarter was all East, dominated mostly by Reeves. He scored on the East’s second play from scrimmage, added another short touchdown run just before the period ended and drove his team down the field both on the ground and in the air.

The East defense, meanwhile, stymied the West at every turn. All six of the West’s first-half drives ended on downs, twice in its own territory and another after the West had driven to the East 11.
