First-year Monterey defensive coordinator Reese Fleming died late Monday night after a sudden illness. He was 46.
Lubbock Independent School District officials said a cause of death has not been determined. Fleming reportedly was ill while working with the rest of the coaching staff on Sunday and was sent home, and later was admitted to University Medical Center sometime on Monday.
Fleming, a native of Friona who played collegiately at West Texas A&M according to LISD athletic director Mark Ball, was in his first season as the Plainsmen’s defensive coordinator, coming to Monterey from Kauffman. Ball said Fleming’s parents recently moved to Lubbock.
Ball said Monterey’s annual Battle for the Silver Spurs game against Lubbock High, scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday at Lowrey Field, will continue as scheduled.
Services for Fleming will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the South Plains Church of Christ with burial at Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park in Woodrow. Visitation will be Friday, 4-6 p.m., at Lake Ridge Chapel.
Fleming is survived by his wife and 2-year-old daughter.

Thoughts and prayers for his family.. both at Home and at Monterey
Rest easy in the Lord`s embrace
Very sad to hear of Reese`s passing. We were roommates and friends at WT back in the late 80`s. I am sorry I didn't do a better job of keeping in touch over the years. You will be missed.
Sympathies and comfort to your family.
