CLASS 2A Division II Bi-District Playoff: Abernathy vs. Spearman

6:30 p.m., Kimbrough Memorial Stadium, Canyon

Radio: None

Records: Abernathy 8-2; Spearman 7-3

How they got here: Abernathy finished as the runner-up in District 2-2A, Division II; Spearman finished third in District 1-2A, Division II

Players to watch: Abernathy, QB Garrett Royal is a solid dual-threat option, having rushed for 728 yards and six touchdowns and thrown for 812 yards and nine touchdowns; Spearman, RB Justin Willimon leads the Lynx with 780 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.

About the teams: Both teams came out of very solid districts, with Spearman battling against Sanford-Fritch and perennial powerhouse Canadian to reach the playoffs. Abernathy was undefeated in district until a 21-14 loss to Post in the final week of the regular season. Abernathy lost leading returning rusher Matt Dominguez to injury early in the year, but Royal and Tyler Cooper have stepped up to fill the void. Cooper has rushed for 650 yards and seven touchdowns on the season. The teams share two common opponents. Abernathy lost to Canadian 36-29 and beat Fritch 40-6, while Spearman lost to both, 59-21 vs. Canadian and 26-14 last week vs. Fritch. Spearman has recorded five shutouts this season, two of those in district play.

What’s next: The winner gets Alpine (9-1) in the area round
