Bill would require consideration of travel constraints durng next realignment period

AUSTIN — A year ago, officials from the Amarillo Independent School District traveled to Austin with a simple request to the University Interscholastic League, the governing body of athletic programs in the state’s public schools. Move the Tascosa Rebels from Class 5A to Class 4A so that the students don’t have to travel as many as 600 miles, round trip, for road games.

Coaches say cutting back won't affect them much, but are not happy with control being taken out of their hands

The University Interscholastic League Medical Advisory Committee on Sunday unanimously recommended limiting full-contact, game-speed practices to 90 minutes per week. While most South Plains coaches say the limit will have minimal effect on their practices, they are somewhat concerned with the control being taken out of their hands regarding how long or how hard they can work players to prepare them for the three hours of physical contact they face every Friday night.

Idalou assistant Lofton named new athletic diretor/head football coach 03/07/13 - 1:43am

In one sport or another, Jeff Lofton spent time in the mid-1990s being mentored by almost every coach on the current Idalou staff. Now, he becomes their mentor. The school announced Wednesday that Lofton, a 1997 graduate of Idalou and an assistant coach at the school since 2009, has been hired as the Wildcats’ new athletic director and head football coach.

Shallowater's Black named TSWA first-team all-state 02/21/13 - 1:29am

Despite missing time late in the season with a broken hand, Shallowater junior running back Jarek Black was named to the Texas Sports Writers Association Class 3A All-State Football Team as a member of the first team on Wednesday. Black was well on his way to a possible 3,000-yard season before suffering the injury midway through district. Still, he finished the season with 2,372 rushing yards; 29 touchdowns. Black was the only South Plains player named to the first, second or third team.

Sundown lineman Troy Holdman earns first-team honor

Texas Tech signee Dee Paul was named the Defensive Player of the Year on the Collin Street Bakery/ Texas Sports Writers Association Class 1A All-State football team released Monday. The Munday Mogul was also selected as a first-team athlete. Among South Plains-area players, Sundown senior Troy Holdman was named to the first team on the offensive line. He led the Roughnecks with 108 pancake blocks while grading at 98 percent.

Wayland Baptist University continues to haul in some of the area’s top football talent as six members of the 2012 Monterey team signed letters of intent with the Pioneers on Monday. Quarterback Jacob Bartholomae, defensive lineman Paul Childers, receivers De’Erick Conner and T’Aerious Rowe and lineman Patrick Hebisen and Trevor Lee all signed with Wayland in a ceremony held Monday afternoon at Plainsmen Alley.

For most of their football-playing lives, Frenship running back D’Maujeric Tucker and offensive lineman Dalyn Bearden have been on the same team, from youth league through junior high and high school. On Wednesday, each signed national letters of intent at different schools. Not just different school, but competing schools in the Lone Star Conference as Tucker signed with Eastern New Mexico in Portales, N.M. while Bearden inked with Tarleton State in Stephenville.

Charles Keller may have been shy and soft spoken when he signed with Cisco College on Wednesday morning, but his performance on the field speaks for itself. Keller, who racked up 100 tackles, nine sacks and an interception for Lubbock High as a senior linebacker, was the “quarterback of the defense,” coaches David Moody and Duane Toliver said Wednesday morning shortly after Keller signed to play for Cisco College, a two-year school near Abilene.
