Jordan Hise hit two 3-pointers to help lead the Cooper girls basketball team to a 20-point second quarter, and the Lady Pirates held on for a 45-43 win against Monterey in both teams’ season opener Monday night.

Down 45-41, Monterey’s Karolyne McMillian had an offensive rebound and putback with 7 seconds left in the game to cut the lead to two, but Cooper was able to inbound the ball and run out the clock.

Hise had 10 of her team-high 12 points in the second quarter, stepping up when teammate Bridget Rampy picked up her third foul of the half.

Monterey was led by McMillian’s 14 points in a back-and-forth game.

However, Cooper built a late, six-point lead to give the Lady Pirates just enough cushion to stave off the Lady Plainsmen.

Shawanika Harvey added 10 points for Monterey and Libby Sloan dropped in eight for Monterey. Cooper’s Haley Bruedigam had 10 points, with Summer Bednarz chipping in seven.
