City girls high school basketball roundup: Lubbock High wins three straight to close GC tournament

GARDEN CITY — Amanda Metzler scored nine points — four from the free-throw line during a key fourth-quarter sequence — and Lubbock High beat Garden City 52-38 in the final game of the Garden City tournament Saturday, leaving the two teams tied for best record in the non-bracketed event.

Lubbock High had a three-point lead in the fourth period when Metzler drew a foul and the Garden City coach subsequently picked up a technical foul for arguing the call.

Metzler made both ends of her one-and-one and two technical-foul free throws, extending the lead to seven and giving the Lady Westerners the momentum they needed to go on and pull away.

Jessi Newman scored eight points for Lubbock High (6-6), and Amanda Pattillo, Taryn Brooks and Krystal Applegate added seven apiece.

The Lady Westerners exceeded their victory total from last season, when they finished 5-25.

Metzler and Brooks were named to the all-tournament team.

Holly Halfmann scored 10 points for Garden City, which also went 3-1 in the tournament.

The win was the third in a row for Lubbock High after the Lady Westerners lost their first game of the tournament.

Lubbock High trounced Coahoma 66-17 late Friday behind 13 points from Metzler, 12 apiece from Natassja Lopez and August Thompson and 11 from Amanda Pattillo.

The Lady Westerners stopped Stanton 45-36 earlier Saturday. Metzler made four 3-point goals in a 17-point performance, and Brooks was next with 12.
