Girls high school basketball playoffs roundup: Lawley, McMillian lead Monterey past Amarillo

Posted: February 12, 2013 - 11:51pm  |  Updated: February 13, 2013 - 1:27am

PLAINVIEW — Monterey coach Jill Schneider and her players knew the situation before their Class 4A bidistrict game with Amarillo even started.

“Nobody expected us to win except our locker room,” Schneider said. “And I’m not sure how much we believed it until we got started.”

What Monterey started and completed Tuesday night was the upset of the early Class 4A girls playoffs knocking off Amarillo 57-51 before 300 fans at Hutcherson Center.

Amarillo High had beaten Monterey by 14 points in a December game in Amarillo and at one point led the Lady Plainsmen 40-15.

District 4-4A No. 3 seed Monterey (17-15) will meet the winner of El Paso Austin and El Paso Hanks in area.

District 3-4A No. 2 seed Amarillo High ends its season at 24-8.

Monterey won because its man-to-man defense never let the Lady Sandies go on any significant runs in the tightly contested game.

Monterey won because of clutch shooting down the stretch and 16 points each from Courtney Lawley and Karolyne McMillian.

The Lady Plainsmen took the lead for good with 1:07 to play when Sidnee Harrison made a 3-point goal from the top of the key for a 52-49 lead. Amarillo answered with a pair of Lexi O’Hair free throws cutting the lead to 52-51.

But the physical game with nine lead changes in the second half did not change leads again.

McMillian and Shawanika Harvey combined to go 5-of-6 from the line in the final 47.8 seconds to seal the upset.

Amarillo, led by O’Hair’s 18 points, missed twice on chances to take the lead in the final 45 seconds.

“I can’t even tell you how proud I am of this group,” Schneider said. “All we talked about is the game at Amarillo High, how they got us down 40-15 and how humiliating it was. The pressure was on them. They are a great team. But all we had to do is come in here and take our best shot and we did.”
