Who: Mia Ochoa

School: Whitharral

Class: Senior

Last week: When the Whitharral Lady Panthers needed her the most, the senior Ochoa continually stepped up her game in leading the team back to the state tournament for the third straight season. In three games leading up to the state semifinals, Ochoa averaged 18.6 points per game, scoring 19 against Valley, 15 against Grady and 22 in the regional final against Hartley.

On the season: The season started slowly for Ochoa due to an injury, but head coach Josh Jourden said she’s been the most consistent player for the Lady Panthers in the playoffs.

Her experience and shooting ability from 3-point range will be key for Whitharral as they seek their first state championship in their third trip to the state tournament this week in Austin.

Up next: Whitharral (36-4) faces Leakey in a Class 1A Division II state semifinal at 7 p.m. Friday in Austin.
