Six-man high school football roundup: Spivey throws OT TD for Sands' win

ACKERLY — Devin Spivey threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jerad Staggs in overtime, lifting Sands past Wellman-Union 66-60 in the season finale for the District 5-IIA six-man teams.

Barry Norris ran for 206 yards and four touchdowns for Sands, which finished 5-5 and 1-2 in district. Spivey carried 24 times for 189 yards and two TDs. Passing-wise, he completed only 2 of 5 for 22 yards, but both went for touchdowns.

He also was intercepted twice.

Wellman-Union finished 1-9 and 0-3. The Wildcats’ Kaleb Chase ran for 103 yards and two touchdowns, and Kolby Chase threw for 178 yards and four TDs. The Wildcats scored three touchdowns on returns, getting a kickoff-return score apiece from Nathaniel Steiger and Kaleb Chase and a 40-yard interception runback from Kolby Chase.

Wellman-Union took a 60-54 lead late in regulation when Kolby Chase threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Dallas Walters. Sands came back to tie on a 5-yard run by Norris, whose other TDs came on runs of 10, 20 and 35 yards.

It was a back-and-forth fourth quarter with Wellman-Union scoring three touchdowns and Sands countering with two touchdowns.

Kolby Chase connected with Dallas Walters for two scoring passes and with Hunter Walters and Kaleb Chase for one TD apiece.

In the second quarter, Wellman-Union made up a 30-24 deficit on a 72-yard scoring pass from Kolby Chase to Kaleb Chase and Kolby Chase’ interception-return TD.

Spivey countered with a 48-yard run, and Sands regained the lead.

Wilson 58, Southland 6

SOUTHLAND — Jordan Guzman ran for five touchdowns and returned a fumble for another, leading Wilson past Southland 58-6 Friday night in a District 4-IIA six-man season finale.

Wilson (5-5, 1-2 in district) stopped Southland (1-9, 0-3) by 45-point rule at halftime.

Guzman scored on runs of 36, 3, 3, 64 and 16 yards. His 24-yard fumble return TD made it 24-0 less than four minutes into the game.

Austin Castillo returned a fumble 33 yards for a touchdown less than two minutes before Guzman’s defensive score.

Castillo added a 50-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter that gave the Mustangs a 38-0 lead.

Matthew Richardson kicked five two-point conversions.

Cale Fogerson got Southland on the scoreboard, his 3-yard run at 6:58 in the second period making it 46-6.

Borden County 56

O’Donnell 0

O’DONNELL — Borden County’s Tanner Richey passed for 121 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 121 yards in a 56-0 victory against O’Donnell in a District 4-1A six-man contest.

Borden County clinched the District 4-1A six-man title, moving up to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in district play, while the Eagles fell to 1-9 and 0-3.

T.J. Basquez claimed two of O’Donnell’s touchdowns on a 1-yard run and a 30-yard pass reception.

O’Donnell’s Sterling Wilkie completed five of nine passes for 17 yards.
