City soccer roundup: Sanchez's goal sends Monterey to victory

Claudia Sanchez scored the only goal of the game, and Monterey’s girls soccer team opened the District 2-5A season with a 1-0 shutout of rival Coronado on Saturday.

Klair Weddige picked up the victory in goal for the Lady Plainsmen (9-5, 1-0).

The Lady Plainsmen will be back in action on Tuesday at home against Amarillo High beginning at 5 p.m.

Monterey boys

Marc Casares scored twice and the Monterey boys soccer team surged past rival Coronado in the second half for a 3-0 shutout of the Mustangs on Saturday in the District 2-5A opener for both teams.

Jaron Griffith added the third goal for the Plainsmen (6-6-1, 1-0) and Richard Perez garnered an assist.

Tino Gamueda earned his fifth shutout victory of the year in goal for the Plainsmen, who will face Amarillo on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Monterey.

Lubbock High boys

Zak Abdirahman scored a goal in the 48th minute Saturday to lift the Tascosa boys soccer team into a 1-1 District 2-5A draw with Lubbock High in Lubbock.

Kyle White put the Westerners (0-0-1 in 2-5A) with a goal in the 18th minute.

Abdirahman’s goal came off an assist by Ian Gilmore.

Lubbock High girls

Kelsey Preston found the goal with five minutes left in what had been a scoreless District 2-5A girls soccer match to lift Tascosa to a 1-0 win over Lubbock High in Lubbock.

Preston’s goal came off a corner kick by Olivia Stovall in both teams’ district opener.
