High school tennis roundup: Coronado on cruise control in District 2-5A

The Coronado tennis team swept its pair of matches last weekend, downing both Amarillo and Tascosa 18-1 to remain unbeaten in District 2-5A.

The Mustangs dominated across the board against Tascosa and lost only three games in the six boys singles matches. Wilks Kothmann, Dalton Qualls, Abdul Amor and John Young all earned 6-0, 6-0 victories. Elizabeth Preston did the same at No. 6 girls singles.

Coronado (13-5, 6-0 in district) lost only six combined games in the six boys and girls doubles matches.

The Mustangs will face Monterey at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Lubbock High cruised past Monterey in a District 2-5A match Tuesday.

The Westerners swept all six boys singles matches. Max Levine downed Jack Humphrey 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1. Lubbock High also swept all three boys doubles matches.

Three of Monterey’s victories came in girls singles. Peyton Lewallen won at No. 3, Kiersten Cox at No. 5 and Julia Hurtado won at No. 6.

Monterey split its series against Amarillo and Tascosa last weekend, downing the Rebels 15-4 and falling to Amarillo 14-5.

Against Tascosa, the Plainsmen got boys singles wins from Humphrey, Justin Thetford, Dylan Treadwell, Billy Jefferson and Chad Davis. On the girls side, Jessica Bentley, Megan Waagner. Mercedes Cruz, Rene Martinez and Lewallen all recorded wins.

Lubbock High will return to action at 9 a.m. Oct. 15 against Amarillo. Monterey will face Coronado at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Frenship

The Tigers split a pair of weekend series against Palo Duro and Dumas in Amarillo.

Frenship downed Palo Duro 16-3 and fell to Dumas 13-6 and are now 6-3 in District 3-4A.

The Tigers swept at girls singles, picking up wins from Madison Smith, Claire Tisdale, Brittany McClellan, Ashtyn Kahn, Tristan Taylor and Camberly Grant. Frenship won five of the six boys singles matches, as well.
