AUSTIN — The people screaming from the stands didn’t bother New Deal freshman Jordan Menton, and they only boosted Seagraves senior Damian Vidales. Menton made a remarkable debut at the Class 1A state track and field meet, winning the girls high jump and triple jump and finishing third in the 100-meter hurdles over two days. Vidales scored one gold medal, one silver, one bronze — and nearly a state meet record when he highlighted a Saturday afternoon’s work by routing the field in the 400 meters.

Neither won, but the two seniors’ silver-medal performances fueled Estacado at the Class 3A state track and field meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium. AUSTIN — All morning and throughout the afternoon, South Plains athletes were foiled trying to win a gold medal at the UIL state track and field meet. Idalou’s 7-foot high jumper Bradley Adkins got upset. Post’s Corbin McDonald got knocked out of first place in the last round of the triple jump. Then the evening session started and the gold medals started rolling in.

Rios has one last shot at gold 05/11/12 - 5:41am

Estacado senior Raymond Rios has accumulated plenty of medals at big track meets the last three years, being the three-time Region I-3A champion in the 800 meters and finishing fourth and second in that event the last two years at state. Who knows what might happen this weekend, now that he no longer has to tangle with Brandon Lacy. Rios battled the three-time state champion from Lytle each of the last two years, including a memorable stretch duel in 2011.

Wariner's mark falls at regional track meet 04/29/12 - 5:57am

If Aldrich Bailey someday becomes a world-class quartermiler, Saturday in Lubbock might be viewed as the time and place that he broke onto the scene. The Mansfield Timberview track star broke the Region I-5A meet record in the 400 meters, running a time of 45.19 seconds at Texas Tech’s Fuller Track Complex. The record belonged to Olympic gold medalist Jeremy Wariner, and the time should get Bailey into the Olympic trials this summer — the U.S. Track and Field web site lists 45.30 as the “A” standard for qualifying.

High school track's regional meets roundup: Muleshoe's Baca going to state after 800-meter victory 04/29/12 - 5:57am

ODESSA — Muleshoe’s Junior Baca is headed to state meet after winning the 800-meter race at the Region I-2A track meet at Ratliff Stadium on Saturday. Baca crossed the finish line in 1 minute, 56.11 seconds, less than one second ahead of Crane’s Jonathan Harrold. Baca also qualified for state in the 400-meter race after finishing second with a time of 50.33 seconds.

Region I-5A Track Meet: Uchebo earns state meet berth in triple jump 04/29/12 - 5:57am

Pamela Uchebo didn’t rise to the occasion in the Region I-5A meet’s long jump competition Friday at the Fuller Track Complex, but at least she had a thought to fall back on. The long jump’s not what she’s good at anyway. She’s a triple-jump specialist, and that event was still out there. On Saturday, the Lubbock High junior went 39 feet, 8 inches in the last round of her favorite event. The big jump moved her from fourth place to second and earned her a trip to state, her first.
