Timothy Matinelli scored netted a hat trick to lead the Westerners to a 4-1 victory against first-place San Angelo Lake View in District 7-4A play.

Ebo Pratt Panford also scored for Lubbock High.

The win moves LHS into third place with 12 points, three points behind first-place Lake View and two points behind Monterey.

Frenship is in fourth with nine points.

Monterey girls

Claudia Sanchez scored two goals and Destiny Chavez added another to lead Monterey to a sound 3-0 victory against Abilene High on Tuesday in District 7-4A play.

Sanchez and Jaedyn Gutierrez had assists for the Lady Plainsmen (13-5-2, 6-0-1 in district play), who take on Frenship at 7 p.m. Friday in Wolfforth.

Monterey boys

Behind the strength of four first-half goals, Monterey blasted Abilene Wylie 6-0 in a District 7-4A game on Tuesday night.

Jordan Gutierrez led the attack with a pair of goals. Cobi Faz, Pancho Jimenez, Zach Smith and Chris Reynolds each tallied goals for the Plainsmen (12-3-6, 3-0-4 in district play). Tino Gamueda earned his 13th shutout of the year in goal.

 

Tennis

MIDLAND — Karly Garland and Emily Alderson won girls doubles and Coronado took second out of 16 teams in the Tall City Invitational that concluded Saturday.

Garland and Alderson won four matches in a row, the first two by 6-0, 6-0 scores and downed San Angelo Central’s Cheyenne Duncan and Anna Schneemann, 6-4, 6-3.

Lubbock High finished fourth in the team standings, getting a second-place finish from Michael Dodd and Doreen Krasta in mixed doubles. El Paso Coronado, a state-tournament qualifier last year, won the tournament. Monterey finished 11th in the team standings.

Coronado freshmen Reagan Collins and Mariel DeLeon finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in girls singles, and the team of Bree Brosig and Brooke Gilliam were seventh in girls doubles.

Lubbock High’s Robert Woody got fourth in boys singles. He won twice in straight sets, then dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to El Paso Franklin’s Ricardo James, who went on to win boys singles.

Monterey’s Billy Jefferson and Evan Geist were eighth in boys doubles, and Coronado’s Megan Melcher and Preston Harmon finished eighth in mixed doubles.
