No. 10: New Deal Lions

Coach: Ron Mayo (16th season)

2011 record: 7-4, 2-2 in District 3-1A, Division I (third place)

Playoff results: lost to Seymour 20-6 in first round

Key losses: RB/NG Morgan Gonzales, TE/DL Ricardo Nunez; WR/LB Javier Otero, WR/CB Corie Ramirez, RB/LB Freddie Briseno

Key returners: OL/DE Samuel Abercrombie, WR/S Aaron Mares, QB Kyler Bean, RB V.J. Gamez, WR/LB Abraham Villarreal

2011 statistics: Offense, 22.8 ppg, 337.9 ypg; Defense, 19.3 ppg., 246.1 ypg.

2012 breakdown: After finishing third in district last year with a young, inexperienced group, the 2012 Lions look more like what head coach Ron Mayo is used to — hungry, experienced and talented. ... Look for the Lions to do some atypical things on offense, like throw the football or maybe even run some Wildcat. Mayo is high on junior running back V.J. Gamez, a versatile athlete Mayo says can run and throw the ball. Gamez rushed for 668 yards and 10 touchdowns last year. But don’t forget about seniors Jeff Reed (599 yards, 5 TDs), Andrew Alaniz and Hunter Harper. ... Sam Abercrombie on the line and a host of linebackers allows Mayo to go back to the 4-3 defensive scheme. ... The Lions should be favored in District 2-1A, Division I but will face a strong test from Sundown.

10. New Deal

9. On Thursday: This team ended a 10-year district championship drought and did so with a couple of key members of the team out with injuries. They’re also set up to make another run at a league crown and possibly a deep run in the postseason.
