High school basketball roundup: Trinity, LCHS girls punch tickets to state

EASTLAND — Led by Shanae Ammons, Ashtyn Thorne and a barrage of 3-pointers, the Trinity Christian girl’s basketball team punched its ticket to the state tournament with a 70-63 victory Tuesday against No. 2 Tyler Gorman.

The No. 9 Lady Lions (28-11) took a 34-24 lead into the half before Gorman made a run to tie the TAPPS regional at 49.

From there, Ammons hit one of her five 3-pointers to key a 7-0 run, which put Trinity on top for good.

Ammons scored 25 points, and Thorne hit four 3-pointers en route to 21 points.

Emma Hardin chipped in 12 points for Trinity, which will face Fort Worth Christian at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Mansfield Legacy High School.

Gorman’s Michelle Obach, who is committed to play at Merrimack (Mass.), scored a game-high 33 points. Gorman lost for just the fourth time this season.

ABILENE — Ashlee De La Cruz scored 19 points and Brooke Robertson added 14 to lead No. 24 Lubbock Christian High School into the state tournament with a victory over No. 2 McKinney Christian Academy on Tuesday night in the regional round of the TAPPS playoffs.

LCHS went down 6-0 in the first quarter before using a 13-0 run to end the period, never losing the lead the rest of the way.

Lauren Hoffman snagged 13 rebounds for the Lady Eagles (25-13), and De La Cruz earned a double-double with 10 boards of her own.

Hannah Wilks scored 15 points to lead McKinney Christian (24-5), and Kaitlyn McAdams added 13.

LCHS will play either Amarillo San Jacinto of Dallas Lutheran at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Mansfield Summit High School.

Boys playoffs

ALEDO — Tanner Schrader scored 22 points to push Lubbock Christian past Bullard Brook Hill, 62-60, in a TAPPS regional playoff.

Schrader got hot in the third quarter, hitting three 3-pointers to start off the second half.

Drew Thornton scored 19 points for the Eagles, while Peyton Maddox tossed in 13.

Lubbock Christian will travel to Mansfield to play in the TAPPS state semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday against the winner of the Amarillo San Jacinto/Colleyville Covenant game. LCHS has faced Amarillo San Jacinto twice this year, losing both times. The Eagles previously beat Colleyville Covenant in the area round last year.

ABILENE — Despite battling back to force the game into overtime, No. 18 Trinity Christian couldn’t hang on against No. 22 Cedar Hill Trinity, falling 75-71 in a TAPPS regional playoff game.

Down 45-26 at the half, the Lions held Cedar Hill Trinity to just nine points in the third quarter and a mere six points in the fourth.

Luke Stephenson led Trinity with 32 points. Jaxon Parrott followed with 12 points, while Parker Wentz tossed in 10 points.
